Support A Fair Deal For Your Local!

Dear Pub Supporter

The Fair Deal for Your Local Campaign has been launched by 10 leading organisations including Licensees Supporting Licensees (LSL), CAMRA (The Campaign for Real Ale), The Federation of Small Businesses, The Guild of Master Victuallers, Fair Pint, Licensees Unite the Union, Pubs Advisory Service, Forum of Private Business, Justice for Licensees.

The campaign is calling on the Government to give local pubs a fair deal – through much needed reform of the tied model operated by large pub owning companies. The fundamental problem is that some of the large pub owning companies are taking far more than is fair or sustainable from pub profits therefore making it difficult for many licensees to make a living and causing pub closures.

The Government has committed to introducing a statutory code of practice for the large companies that will enshrine in law the long accepted but largely ignored principle: that the tied licensee should not be worse off than a free of tie licensee.

The Fair Deal for Your Local campaign believes that the only way to ensure fairness is to include in the new code an option for the tied landlords of large companies (with 500 pubs or more) to pay rent only to the pub owning company.

This will make many more pubs able to stay open and succeed pubs and able continue to contribute to their communities and the economy. It will also bring down the cost of a pint in these pubs as well as leading to better and fairer access to the pub market for small brewers which will increase consumer choice.

We need your help!

[TEMPLATE EMAIL TO MPs]

[Remember to include your full name and postal address to get a reply and personalise if you can, by including experience you have of problems facing pubco tied pubs in your area]

Dear [MP]

I am a supporter of the Fair Deal for Your Local campaign and I am writing to you, as my MP, to ask you to join me and thousands of pro-pub campaigners up and down the country, to back a fair deal for our local pubs.

The Fair Deal for Your Local is a national campaign to ensure that the Government gives local pubs a fair deal.

The Fair Deal for Your Local Campaign has been launched by 10 leading organisations including CAMRA (The Campaign for Real Ale), The Federation of Small Businesses, The Guild of Master Victuallers, Fair Pint, Licensees Unite the Union, Pubs Advisory Service, Forum of Private Business, Justice for Licensees and Licensees Supporting Licensees.

The campaign is calling on the Government to give local pubs a fair deal – through much need reform of the tied model operated by large pub owning companies. The fundamental problem is that some of the large pub owning companies is are taking far more than is fair or sustainable from pub profits therefore making it difficult for many licensees to make a living and causing pub closures.

The Government has committed to introducing a statutory code of practice for the large companies that will enshrine in law the long accepted but largely ignored principle: that the tied licensee should not be worse off than a free of tie licensee. This is fantastic news and I am pleased that the Government have now acknowledged that there is a problem that can only be dealt through legislation, with self regulation for the industry having failed to address the endemic overcharging through high rents and inflated beer prices.

The Fair Deal for Your Local campaign believes that the only way to ensure fairness is to include in the new code an option for the tied landlords of large companies (with 500 pubs or more) to pay rent only to the pub owning company (a ‘market rent only’ option).

The market rent only option is the one put forward by the Business Select Committee, chaired at the time by Conservative MP Peter Luff and now by Adrian Bailey MP. They have done 4 exhaustive reports into this issue over 8 years all concluding that abuse of the tie was taking place.

This will make many more pubs able to stay open and succeed and be able to continue to contribute to their communities and the economy. It would allow licensees to employ more staff, invest in their pubs and free them up to innovate. It will also bring down the cost of a pint in these pubs as well as leading to better and fairer access to the pub market for small brewers which will increase consumer choice.

This is not abolishing the tie, indeed it would actually make the tie work as it should and sadly now so often does not, which is that if a licensee pays higher beer (and other product) prices they then pay a correspondingly lower than market rent. Pubcos have skewed & misused the tie so this is no longer the case.

It is important to note that a statutory code will not apply to Britain’s family brewers, who operate a different model of the tie, as they all have less than 500 pubs. So they will be unaffected.

So I am asking you to show your support for a Fair Deal for your local pubs by:

1. Signing up to support the campaign at www.fairdealforyourlocal.com, as I have.

2. Take part in the Government’s consultation on pub companies and tenants before June 14th telling the Government that we need a fair deal for local pubs – which means that the statutory code has to include a fair, market rent only option. See www.fairdealforyourlocal.com for advice on how to both fill in the survey and submit your own contribution.

Please also follow the campaign on Twitter at @fairdeal4locals  and use the hashtag #fairdeal4yourlocal to show your support. You can also get a ‘Twibbon’ at http://twibbon.com/support/fairdeal4yourlocal/twitter!

Thanks for your support and with your help, we can finally get a Fair Deal for Your Local – and help thousands of British pubs!

Yours sincerely
